205 – The 1 thing that will make you happy

Hey mama. This is Mama’s Daily Dose, the short, actionable podcast for mamas who want more. I’m Meghan Q Barrett of allyoumama.com. Wrapping up our week of the theme of happiness and being happy, Mama’s Daily Dose is… the one thing that will make you happy… let’s get moving, before we get interrupted.


Have you ever been in a relationship where you are leaning on someone else to make you happy, like, their life and what they do, and all of those things are going to make you happy, and you were just waiting for them to make you happy? Or maybe it was the other way around. And you were in a relationship with somebody that was looking to you to make them happy. And no matter what side you were on, I’m sure you realized that another person is not going to make you happy. Like we talked about yesterday and Connie Podesta’s quote, you cannot make a another human being happy. And you will make yourself so unhappy and crazy, trying to make someone else happy. 


And I know this intimately. When my husband and I were first married, we lived in the Cayman Islands, and he was in Vet school, and I moved down there to be with him. And in the beginning, I didn’t have a job. And he was at school all the time. I was super lonely and feeling down on myself. And I just kept looking to him to make me happy. And I remember saying to him, “you just don’t make me happy.” And he said, “how can I make you happy?” He wanted to make me happy, so bad. And I didn’t have an answer. 

 
Because no one else can make you happy. Only you can make yourself happy. The one thing, the one thing that can make you happy is staring at you in the mirror. It is you. And it is a choice. And it is a choice that you make every day. So if you really do want to be happy, if you really are like most mamas out there and you want your kids to be happy too…then it starts with you. Choose to be happy. Choose to bring the joy.

 
Mama, your action today is a little different. We talk a lot about taking care of yourself and putting yourself first. But you know what brings a lot of joy is when you surprise others or you bring joy and happiness to someone else. So what is one thing you can do today to bring joy to someone else? Go bring joy to someone else’s life, drop a little note a text, give someone a hug, whatever it is.
