172 – Why you feel more anxiety as a mom

This is one of my favorite topics because I was diagnosed with postpartum anxiety in 2020, right before the whole shut down, and all of that stuff. And it got me diving in to anxiety in moms, and there is the clinical diagnosis of postpartum anxiety and anxiety. But what I found is that moms actually have more anxiety than non mothers, you have more anxiety than you did before you were a mom. And that is because there’s different stuff going on. In your brain. There’s this little thing, it’s like almond shaped, it’s called your amygdala. And in studies, it’s shown that women before they were mothers, after they were mothers, the same exact amygdala changed. Once they became mothers, it was more lit up and more active, which means that your base level anxiety is actually higher. When you become a mom, I know you may be by yourself, but I want you to raise your hand, if you felt more anxiety, since becoming a mom, right? I’m sure y’all are raising your hands. Because that’s a big responsibility. You know, you got to take care of a human, you got to make sure that they stay alive, that they’re safe. And you are, you know, the biggest impact on this child’s life, and who they are going to become in life. And with that brings lots of anxiety. So just knowing that your base level anxiety and fear is already higher than it was prior to kids or compared to those that don’t have kids is important to realize, especially when you’re trying to make changes in your life because as we talked about yesterday, with the unknown comes all of this anxiety and fear that your level, it’s already higher. So don’t feel alone in this. There’s a reason that your anxiety and fear are higher since becoming a mom.
