101 – Be a part of something bigger than yourself

Hey mama. This is Mama’s daily dose. I’m Meghan Q Barrett of allyoumama.com. Happy Monday, Mama. And Mama’s daily dose is… be a part of something bigger than you. Let’s get moving, before we get interrupted.

I’ve talked in other episodes about a book called Mothers of the Village by CJ Schneider, and she really zeroes in on being a part of something that is bigger than you. That a lot of times the loneliness that mamas feel, doesn’t come from not being around people. But it comes from not feeling a part of something bigger than ourselves. 

Before having children, you may have been out in the working world and part of a working group, or you may have been in more social groups, or workout groups or church groups. And when we have children, sometimes we have to step away from those groups for a little while, because we just don’t have the time and energy for them. But to really feel valued and to value ourselves, we need to feel a part of something bigger than just ourselves… bigger than just mama, really. 

And there’s so much pressure to find your quote unquote, purpose. What is my purpose in this life? And that just seems like a really big undertaking that, what am I meant to do here on this earth? And the answer is, is it isn’t just one thing, you can have multiple purposes, you can create your purposes. But instead of making it this big, elusive question, focus on how can you be a part of something bigger than just you? This podcast for me is being a part of something bigger than me. It started out as selfish reasons, a way for me to express myself and to connect with other people. But it is bigger than just me because it reaches more people. It reaches more Mama’s and hopefully that inspires those mamas to go out and reach more people. So how can you be a part of something that is bigger than you? How can you be a part of a group? How can you value yourself? And how can you bring a gift to this world?

Mama, you have a gift to give whether you’re aware of it right now or not. It is there. And what can you do to be a part of something that is bigger than just you? Is it volunteering? Is it joining a Sports Group? Is it going to church, it looks different for everybody. But find a way that you can be part of something that is more than just you. It cuts down on the loneliness and it helps you feel valued not only by others, but also valued by yourself. And have a great day free of mama guilt because you deserve it.
