56 – Your a mama to your kids AND yourself

Hey Mama, this is Mama’s Daily Dose. I’m Meghan Q Barrett of allyoumama.com. Mamas Daily Dose is… you’re a mama to your kids, AND yourself. Let’s get moving before we get interrupted.

Being a mama is interesting, because you’re not only a mother to your kids and responsible for teaching them, raising them, instilling beliefs. But as you’re doing this, it causes you to reflect more on your childhood, and what your parents taught you, if you now believe with what they taught you if you want to bring that to your children, or if you want to change that, or you still have a belief right now that you do want to change. So you’re not only being a mother to your kids, it’s, you’re being a mother to yourself, to you as a child, and to you, in the current time.

I was speaking to my friend about this, how it’s so different, how I’m thinking about how I talk to my kids, specifically around money. I feel like people in our generation and generations before (because it keeps going down from parents and parents that you hear money doesn’t grow on trees.) Well, that gives this idea that money is scarce, when you have it, you have to hold on to it. And that’s not something that I want to teach my children, I don’t want that to be a belief for my children. So not only do I have to change that belief that I have now, I have to change it from when I was a kid, and now show that to my kids. And it goes the same for things that you agree with, that your parents taught you, you have this reflection on all of these things that you are teaching your kids, it’s like you are reliving them, not only as a child, but as an adult, too.

So not only do we have this responsibility of raising our kids and instilling beliefs in them, but we have the responsibility of doing it for ourselves, for ourselves right now in the present, as well as for ourselves in the past when we were really young. So while that is a lot of responsibility, and I feel like it’s been weighing on me a lot lately. It’s also this freedom knowing that in the present moment you can choose what you want, you can choose what you want for yourself and for your kids. And you can also repair or nurture what you had as a child too.
